Day 39 - Daffodils, Just in Time for the Winter Olympics!
I love Vancouver, here we are, 4 days from the Winter Olympics opening ceremonies, and my daffodils are in bloom.
And this isn’t really considered early either. The daffodils through the causeway are still probably a week or two away, but these little ones are always early risers. There is also an iris open and a few primrose blooms have shown their faces to us. I’ve seen crocuses in many places and the cherry trees have been showing their colours for weeks.
I never liked spring until I moved here, mainly because where I grew up spring meant potholes, slush, grit and dirt and the unpleasant smell of rotting vegetation that hadn’t seen the light of day since sometime in late October when the world froze and was covered in an insulating blanket of white.
But here, here spring starts when the New Year is rung in. Buds are trying to swell and burst forth immediately. Spring isn’t so bad after all.
It’s actually quite funny, the media really is blowing it out of proportion since the mountain in question really only has a couple of events scheduled at it. The majority of the snow related events are up in Whistler, which has a record amount of the white stuff.
But I am really glad that we didn’t buy season’s ski passes for the local mountain as we usually do.
