Day 188 - Legendary

188/365 (July 7, 2010) – Summer has finally arrived. And with the heat, the cooking moves outside into the Weber. Charcoal in this household, no gas here thank you very much (except to get the coals going more quickly).

Kind of a last minute photo, not a lot of thought or effort today, but there’s a good reason.

I was in motorcycle class today. More like motorcycle boot camp! Pacific Riding School is a great school, with a crazy eight time supersport champion as one of the instructors. They get you going in a classroom over two days and then give you the better part of three days in a parking lot, plus one and a half days of road riding. But they do some things that you won’t experience in any other riding school.

Today was day one in the lot. Day one on a bike with a clutch for me. Considering I ride a scooter (automatic) I think I did pretty well by only popping the clutch once. But once they got you comfortable with the clutch, things got interesting.

They focused on focus. And then literally threw everything they had at you to try to make you lose your focus. By literally, I do mean literally….they threw water in our faces as we rode, shot us with water guns, threw pylons at our heads, grabbed our knees, rattled the bikes, yelled at us, pushed us, jumped on the back of the bikes with us and grabbed the handlebars, grabbed our helmets and twisted our heads…all while we were moving. It was….interesting. It went well and I got a special kudos for focus. But oh man was it hot. It was over 30C out in Surrey. Now put on jeans, thick leather riding boots, a riding jacket and gloves and get on a hot motorcycle on a paved lot with no shade. For about 5 hours. The water they threw at us felt good…and it felt even better when I took off my helmet and he dumped a bucket of icy water straight over my head.

I had been speaking with “Kramer” earlier and mentioned that I wasn’t even sure I wanted a bike since I had my scooter. By lunch he looked at me and said “You are definitely going to get a bike…. you should have seen your smile out there.”

But you know what I really hate? Walking in wet denim. That’s just an awful feeling.

Tomorrow is day two, it will be just as hot…I’ll remember to bring a second shirt, at least I had shorts to change into today though.

Day 167 – Oval Balloon Whisk

Day 167 - Oval Balloon Whisk

167/365 (June 16, 2010) – I love kitchen stuff. It’s a weakness of mine. Probably the reason for owning about eight to ten whisks. Actually gave my electric hand mixer away recently in favour of using a whisk for the small jobs (My Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer deals with the heavy duty jobs).

Whisk

1. A kitchen instrument manufactured with a series of thin metal wires, each formed into a loop so both ends of the wires attach to a handle. The loops, which are placed in slightly different directions from each other, form a rounded bulb shape. Whisks are used to blend ingredients together quickly or to incorporate air into ingredients such as egg whites or heavy cream in order to increase the volume of the mixture.

There are a variety of different types, shapes and sizes of whisks available depending on the requirements for their use. Some of the most common whisks include: Ball, Round Balloon, Oval Balloon, Coil, Flat End, Flat, French, Piano, Twirl, Whisk with a ball, Dough, Beverage, Twig, and Thermometer whisk. Typically made of stainless steel or hardened plastic, many whisks are available in small or large sizes, with some containing electronic sensors. Electronic sensors that measure statistics such as the temperature of ingredients is of value to many food preparers as they mix foods such as custards, chocolates, or meringues that require whisking the mixtures at specific temperatures.

A utensil similar to a whisk known as a whip is often used that is basically a larger version of a whisk. Whisks range in size from 6 to 24 inches in length while a whip ranges in size from 24 to 60 inches in length.

2. The process of using a whisk to blend ingredients together or to incorporate air into ingredients to increase their volume.

Who knew there were so many types of whisks? Check out the link for images of many different kinds of whisks…. hmmm, I’m missing a few of those…

Day 166 - Fresh Tomatoes

166/365 (June 15, 2010) – I love this time of year….fruits and vegetables actually start to taste like they should again.

I tend to prefer to buy produce in season, usually it’s the best quality, and it hasn’t travelled to places I haven’t!

Day 165 – Bagel with Cranberry Blossom Honey

Day 165 - Bagel with Cranberry Blossom Honey

165/365 (June 14, 2010) – I’ve never been great at breakfast, eating it that is. And my memories of honey are tainted because when I was a child I often came down with terrible coughs (still do as an adult too) and cough syrup never worked (still doesn’t).

In an attempt to get to sleep, my father would haul me out to the kitchen and make me eat honey by the tablespoon in hopes of coating my throat and stop the coughing. So, as a result, honey is not a treat, but a medicine.

But I also know how darned good it is for us. Natures miracle syrup really. I mean, think about it, take that jar of honey that’s been sitting at the back of the cupboard for years…anything growing in it? I bet not!

So I’m trying to introduce it back into my diet a bit at a time. It’s made it’s way into my chai tea. I used to use sugar, then switched to Stevia in an attempt to reduce sugar intake. Now I’ve switched to honey.

And, since taking a drive out to the Honeybee Centre in Surrey and finding some wonderful different flavours of honey based on the fields they are raised in, I am having it on my bagel too.

Cranberry blossom honey….very, very good.

Day 163 - Sunny Sunday Afternoon

164/365 (June 13, 2010) – They say that Canada has two seasons – winter and patio. Today definitely fell into the patio season category, although morning sucked. But by afternoon, a Strongbow on a patio was definitely in order!
