Poor Milo

October 29th, 2008, posted in CritterTalk

I sprain two ankles…I whimper and keep my feet up as much as possible. Do I go to a doctor? No…probably should have, but I knew I just had to take it easy and heal and then work on the ankles to get them working right again.

What does that have to do with Milo?

The other day we came home and Milo was limping. I can’t find anything major wrong, no swelling, no cuts, no crusted blood or anything. But he is limping of hopping along on three legs. Frustratingly, I can’t get him into the vet until tomorrow.

I am almost positive it’s a result of a scuffle between he and Loki. Most likely up on top of the computer cabinet. Milo is not a good jumper, unlike Loki, and he doesn’t take any unnecessary risks…unlike Loki… When I felt his leg I could handle his paw roughly, firm pressure on his leg didn’t elicit any unusual response, but he jerked away when I applied pressure to his elbow joint. it seems to be a load bearing issue, he can scratch (pull) but putting his weight on it seems to hurt him

Does he slow down? Of course not. he still jumps up, even though we put a set of stairs at the bed. He still goes after Loki. he still tries to run down the hall after me. He just won’t rest.

I think it’s amazing how we as humans won’t go to the doctor for so many things….but when our pets have the same issues, we are so terribly concerned that we head for the vet. We know that our pets can’t speak, they can’t tell us where it hurts or why. They are reliant on us for their health and well being.

And so off we go to the vet tomorrow. I’m sure he’s just jammed his knee or bashed it on the corner of something…but we’ll find out tomorrow.

Poor Milo……

Fall can be spectacular!

We had our student cruise yesterday, wow, what a great day on the water! We teach safe boating through Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, via Norvan Squadron in North Vancouver. Midway through each class (March and October) we hold an on the water training session to put the plotting and charting into context. Historically, it has always been held out of Deep Cove and we always seem to get hit with nasty weather (rain, fog, wind etc…). It’s a long haul for some of the vessel owners and we have been having difficulty in the past couple of years because of it.

This year, several of us decided that a change might be a good idea. Since several of us are also members of Burrard Yacht Club, which is much closer to home for many of the boats, we put things in motion to hold the cruise out of there for a change. There was a little bit of debate as one member on our Executive Committee seemed to have something solidly against the idea citing the dangers of the inner harbour. The majority of us felt that the inner harbour was the logical place to hold the cruise for this very reason…at some time, we all need to transit the region and shouldn’t we be teaching our class about how to do so safely?

One member called the Vancouver Traffic Control and spoke to them about it and they absolutely LOVED the idea. And so off we went.

Several of us headed down the night before, Kirk and I were to stay on a boat overnight but Kirk hurt his back that morning so the prospect of a boat bed wasn’t appealing. We stuck around for a potluck dinner and then headed home. Sunday dawned bright and clear, although cold at 3 degrees C. But the sun warmed us up quickly.

It was a fantastic day on the water, clear, quiet, placid….and the students had a great time. We found a few glitches in the cruise we developed so I need to go back and make some adjustments, but other than that, it was great. We came back to the club, had a few burgers and enjoyed some laughs.

And I hear it was foggy in Deep Cove…..

Choices, choices…..

In our recent election we had a number of choices (four majors), but really only two contenders. Couple that with the fact that almost half the eligible voters abstained (What is WRONG with you people!?!). Neither presented a particularly great option, and unfortunately the ones who lost had a great idea that was pitched badly and vilified and ridiculed by the others. But do Canadians get into the whole popularity thing? Maybe, but certainly not compared to the election playing out to the South of us. They only have two choices, but each comes along with some extra baggage, it’s a package deal.

A recent newspaper article likened the US election to an American Idol competition and I can’t say I disagree. But from up here the choice seems obvious. The Obama camp doesn’t even have to really spend any effort slandering the McCain crowd…all they need to do is let Sarah open her mouth.

Not a difficult choice. The question is, will the voters actually do what they say in the polls or did many of them lie and they really still harbour the race issue?

Unexpectedly Bright Day...Before the Rains Set In... (by Free 2 Be)Yesterday was supposed to be downright nasty. It dawned damp but by noon it was a stunning day! Wished I’d had the whole day to explore, but I got a ton done at the hatchery. It was still lovely when I left the hatchery around 4pm so I slipped down the road to look for some photo opportunities. There really isn’t a lot in Kitimat…not a lot of tourist sites, not a whole lot to do, but I found a nice park/campground that was closed for the season and went for a nice walk. I got some photos, enjoyed the sun and the cool air…and ended up back at the motel (not that that is really a fair description). This is a weird place, not the worst I’ve stayed at (one in Seattle holds that particular honour), but certainly not the best either. It feels strangely deserted….possibly because I haven’t actually seen another human being. I have seen a bit of evidence (like two other vehicles)…but no people. Not even any staff. I know they have been here since my bed was made (I was sort of surprised when I came back and found that).

This morning when I got up the weather report was that a nasty storm was headed this way, with the possibility of flurries! I can’t say I’d be sad if I saw snow….just not a lot since I’m driving a Toyota Corolla that doesn’t look to have had its snow tires put on yet. As I was getting ready to leave for the hatchery I saw that a person, a real live person, was in the office. I decided I should go and do my paperwork for checking out today instead of tomorrow thinking I might not happen across a person again! Struggled with the internet (worse than bad wireless connection) to get a few photos uploaded and headed off to the hatchery.

Alice's Wonderland? (by Free 2 Be)We finished up at the hatchery and the rain hadn’t hit yet, so I went for a drive. The rain started and the wind picked up. I stopped for a granola bar and saw the most amazing patches of mushrooms at the side of the road! I mean really, really amazing mushrooms! All I ever see down south are the typical cream coloured ones (I know nothing about mushrooms). The ones I’ve stumbled across here are strange and fantastic looking. Like things out of fantasy movies! On one hand the pouring rain sucked because I didn’t want to get down on the ground and get real close ups…on the other hand, these stupid ankles are still hampering me.

On the drive back to town I went up and over a high spot…the rain seemed to thicken and finally! YES! SNOW! Stupid grin on face, I stopped for a minute to enjoy it. Sure, it was wet sloppy snow mixed with rain…but it was still the first snow of the year, and I loved it!

Back to the Motel and suddenly the place came to life. Several cars were waiting for the owner to come to the office. They checked in and went to their rooms. The owner left. A little later, more cars and the owner was back. There has been a steady stream all evening. From a silent place to a busy one. Odd.

Now the rain is coming down heavily and pattering on the roof. Love the sound. I suppose I should do a bit more work before turning in……home tomorrow.

A Few Days in Kitimat

October 14th, 2008, posted in Travel

Welcome to Kitimat (by Free 2 Be)Headed up North this morning for a few days of work at the Kitimat River Fish Hatchery. Up way too early…of course I never sleep well the night before a trip so that makes things that much worse. Kirk dropped me off at the airport and headed for work….very early…I checked my bag and found a place to sit and finish my tea. Then I walked around the corner and was confronted by a massive line of people to get through the security check! And once through the door…the line was even longer! \on the flip side, according to the lady at the entrance…the rest of the people on my plane were apparently also stuck in the line…small comfort…but some. Made it through, just slow. Arrived at my gate….with plenty of time and only half the passengers. I was to be sitting in seat 1F…right up front…usually lots of leg room there in a Dash 8…just nowhere to stick my bag…which, of course didn’t fit in the microscopic overhead compartment. So, out the door it went and down to the skycheck cart….with my poorly packed camera…since I expected to have it with me…..oh well….

Sat down, once my neighbour removed his papers from my seat….it appeared to have been a rather large inconvenience for him that I was there. For the entire flight he invaded my space with his newspapers…all three of them….which he apparently had to read every word of…in great detail. It’s a bit annoying when you are quietly occupying your seat, trying to ready your book…and a paper keeps flopping over it…after about 30 minutes I wanted to shred it and dump it in his lap!

The weather was nice for the flight, the mountains showed a fresh coat of snow at the higher levels. Several receding glaciers have left grooves that are reminiscent of fingers having been dragged through wet sand…but on a global scale.

2 hours later we arrived in Terrace and collected luggage and wandered over to the rental car booth. I have an Emerald Club membership with National and I love it! I never have to wait at check in or check out. There was a line of men and the girl behind the counter looked back and saw me and very logically decided she knew which customer I was and waved me up and handed me an envelope with keys and all paperwork already completed…have a nice day! A few strange looks but I was away. My petty little victory was that when I walked outside, my newspaper friend was wandering all over the lot looking for his rental….mine was in stall number 1. I loaded my stuff, turned on my laptop for a few directions, adjusted the seat and mirrors….drove to the wrong end of the parking lot…drove back…and saw him still walking from car to car looking at license plates (tee hee).

Kitimat Valley and the Head of Douglas Channel (by Free 2 Be)

Drove out of the airport, saw a sign that said “Terrace/Kitimat” and headed off. A few minutes later I entered Terrace downtown but Kitimat had disappeared off the direction signs…Prince Rupert, Prince George….but no Kitimat….pulled over, checked the map to discover I had (of course) turned the wrong way on exiting the airport road. Back up the hill and off in the right direction. It’s about 60 km to Kitimat (if you go the right way at first) and the cold weather has turned the leaves of the poplars that golden yellow I miss. I caught a few rays of sun that lit up the hills, nice since the forecast for the next few days is dismal. There is fresh snow on the mountains surrounding the valley….pretty low down too. I was hoping to take some pictures as I got closer to Kitimat but as it turned out, there were fewer deciduous trees and less and less to take pictures of (not that there was really much anyway). Both Kitimat and Terrace are pretty typical of Northern towns. The same types of buildings seem to be everywhere from Prince George on up. What is nice, is that the pine trees here are actually green! They aren’t that pine beetle red that I’ve come to expect. I stopped in Kitimat to grab a sub for lunch and headed off to find the hatchery…I knew it was right off the road, just over the bridge, and hadn’t bothered to bring the GPS because I wouldn’t need it…..would I??? Well, considering that first wrong turn….. I drove on and on….farther than seemed right…and arrived at the Alcan plant…and was amazed at the size of it! It went on and on…and ended at a gate through which I could not go….missing hatchery! I turned around and headed back and eventually found a sign pointing in to the hatchery. How had I missed that the other way? Since it was lunch time and I knew no one would be at the hatchery I drove along a bit farther to kill some time…and discovered that there WAS no sign from the other direction. Hey, that’s useful!

The Kitimat River (by Free 2 Be)

One side note….on the highway into Kitimat there was a tourist attraction sign…for tours of a taxidermy! Only in Northern BC.

Spent a few hours touring the facility and learning about things there before the day was over and it was time to try to find my hotel. The Kitimat Lodge…much grander sounding than anything I had seen on my short tour…..much grander sounding than it was when I finally located it. It was a little weird to drive up and see the office with a series of notices taped to the inside of the door, one of which had my name on it and a note that said “Paige Ackerman, you are in room 18. Your door is unlocked and the key is in the room” Definitely not in the big city! But what was stranger was the fact that the name underneath mine was Bob Devlin. I can’t imagine it’s the Bob Devlin I know….that would be too weird. I got one of the “Deluxe” rooms…I’d be scared to see what the regular rooms are like. it’s a little self contained suite with a tiny kitchen, a tiny bathroom and a bedroom with two beds and a TV. It’s 6pm. The clock on the coffee maker in the kitchen is flashing 1:15, the clock on t he wall reads 4:20. The bedroom clock is flashing 12:00 and the bedroom wall clock reads 7:10. Cool! Talk about a time warp! So went and bought some groceries, came back and had some dinner, turned on the news to watch the election unfold. Went to check my email…and discovered that the promised wireless internet needs a passcode…and of course there is no staff actually physically on the site. Eventually I managed to contact him and gained internet access…although very, very, very weak access…. About every 15 minutes there is a strange noise like someone i opening the door…comforting thought.

Sadly, it appears that Canada will be subjected to another four years of Stephen Harper…a man who seems bent on turning us into Americans. Awesome!

And so ends Day 1.
