(285/366) Inviting

(285/366) Inviting

October 11, 2012 – Doesn’t that look inviting? I want to sit there with Kirk, share a good bottle of red wine, and watch the world drift by. This is one of the cabins at Tigh-na-Mara, the place I am staying at tonight. I love this resort.

Those two chairs look particularly inviting right now.

Today was physically and mentally exhausting. I am just beat, literally and figuratively. I jumped in on a Chinook egg take, and also in with a very tense facility staff. There are communication issues between staff and management at the site I was at …

(283/366) On the road again

(284/366) On the road again

October 10, 2012 – Traveling again. I think I am actually glad the weekend is calling for rain. Maybe I’ll get to catch up on some rest, and catch up on other things too (like…shockingly…marking!).

But until then, two more days on the road. Port Alberni today and tomorrow, Qualicum Friday.

Sleep in Saturday!

(283/366) The Next Generation

(283/366) The Next generation

October 9, 2012 – I was out in the garden briefly this afternoon after work and noticed that my native Tiger Lily had finally gone to seed. The flowers fell ages ago, and I left the seed pods alone to mature. I usually cut them off after they finish flowering, but I was curious as to what they would turn into. I think the open pods are rather fascinating, and I find it an interesting metaphor that at the end of a cycle, there is promise of new growth.

(282/366) Thankful

(282/366) Thankful

October 8, 2012 – This is my brother, he’s watching my sister-in-law take their other dog through some agility training, that’s why the two of them are so focused. But the point is that this is my brother, and I am incredibly thankful for him. I am thankful to have a sibling, and I am thankful that he has a wonderful family.

In general, we probably don’t appreciate family enough sometimes. I am grateful to have had been able to spend Thanksgiving family with them, and to have been able to spend a bit of time with my father.

Traveling …

(281/366) The Wild Wild East

October 7, 2012 – Not sure what to say about this really. The textures just caught my eye. This is part of a mini-gold course in Cranbrook, BC, in the East Kootenays. After yesterday’s game on a real gold course, and while we were waiting for the turkey to cook, we decided to try our hands at mini-golf. At the end of the game I think I decided that the big course was actually somewhat easier! Cranbrook has a touch little course with some inventively impossible holes! And it is quite artfully presented too

(280/366) A Round of Golf in the Shadow of Mount Fischer

(280/366) Golfing in the Shadow of Mount Fischer
October 6, 2012 – I was coerced into a round of golf today. I haven’t hit a golf ball in probably 20 years, the game has never been particularly appealing to me. But on a day like this, with a view like that, it’s hard to say no. It went much better than I had anticipated, and other than a few balls shot into the underbrush, and one onto another fairway, I managed to keep my dignity. It helps when Kirk identified what club to use. I “usually’ drove it pretty straight, and I “usually” got it a fair ways …

(279/366) Sunset on Mount Baker
October 5, 2012 – Mount Baker looks so small from up here. It also looks so beautiful with the vibrant colours of the fading sun lighting it up.  I’m always grateful for a clear sky when I fly, it makes travel so much more interesting when you get to look down on the world and see things from a bird’s eye view.

(278/366) Snack Time

(278/366) Snack Time

October 4, 2012 – Just a snack at the end of the day. Some good cheese, some fabulous crackers, and a nice glass of wine. We picked up these crackers at the grocery store the other day when the product sample woman was giving tastes of hummus. The crackers she was serving it on were to die for, so we bought those and I came home and made my own hummus (the stuff is ridiculously easy to make so why buy it?).

But as good as the hummus is, these crackers needed something a little less overwhelming on top in …

(277/366) Take time to smell the roses

(277/366) Take time to smell the roses

October 3, 2012 – Time is so precious,  we never have enough.

I had a plan today, I’m good at managing my time, but it can all go sideways with a single email that sends everything less important to the back-burner. Oh well, that’s life at work.

But personal time, now that’s another story.

We squander what we do have on pursuits of things that often don’t matter, and we don’t recognize it until it’s too late. We waste time at the expense of the simple pleasures that feed our hearts. It’s so easy to get our priorities wrong. It’s …

(276/366) King of All He Surveys

(276/366) King of All He Surveys

October 2, 2012 – One of two of our nutty furballs – this is Loki.

Both cats are as friendly as can be, with anyone who comes through the door. We had the boyz up at the vet last night, and she loves when they come in together. As soon as the door is closed they are both released and they take over the exam room. Up on the shelves, in the sink, all over the table, attempted destruction of the chair, reaching under the door at shadows that pass by. They OWN that exam room when they are set …

(275/366) Plates and Bowls

(275/366) Plates and Bowls

October 1, 2012 – Crazy busy day today. Meeting, another meeting, then an escape to my Alma Mater for a really great physiology talk where I had the opportunity to say hello to a fish physiologist who I haven’t seen for many years, and who just made the move to UBC as their newest addition to the Zoology Department. And as an added bonus, one of my former labmates, the last graduate student to go through our lab, had also made the trip out to hear the same talk. So it became a social visit too. An extended ‘family’ visit!…

(274/366) Fall Flowers

(274/366) Fall Flowers

September 30, 2012 – And that’s a wrap. September is over, October is arriving tomorrow. Fall is finally settling in and making its presence known. Those rich jewelled colours are front and centre.

So many things that so many think they need to make them happy. Do you know what makes me happy? A small bunch of flowers brought home from the market and put in a vase on the table. The late afternoon fall sunshine lights them up and makes me smile.

Simple pleasures. Don’t over-think things, it just complicates life. Appreciate what is in front of you, whatever …

(273/366) Piles of Pumpkins

(273/366) Pile of Pumpkins

September 29, 2012 – October is here on Monday, Thanksgiving is a week away, and Halloween is in four weeks. So that means big orange pumpkins have arrived everywhere. It means pumpkin flavoured everything everywhere for the next month!

For example, we stopped in at Starbucks for a coffee and the feature drink for the month is Pumpkin Spice Latte.

I do love the way fall refreshes the senses.

Rich, fabulous, fall colours replace the sun-washed summer shades – rich reds, deep greens, bright yellows, deeper blues, heavy oranges. Sunsets seem richer, more vibrant, and with the shortening days they …

(272/366) Idaho? No Go!

(272/366) Idaho? No Go!

September 28, 2012 – Too much red tape caused too many delays, and the course I was hoping to take that would have benefitted our group filled up before I could gain approval from too many levels up.

Frustrating all around. Frustrating for me. Frustrating for my manager who wanted the knowledge. Frustrating for my colleague who was trying to make it happen – she was pretty much in a rage today.

So much for visiting the land of potatoes.

(271/366) Idaho? I Don’t Know!

(271/366) Idaho? I Don't know!

September 27, 2012 – I may or may not be going to Idaho next week. It’s been a bit laughable trying to sort the travel out and it’s not an issue with whether or not I “can” go at my program level, but an issue of red tape at a higher level.

It was suggested that I attend a course on water reuse. Great idea, but it’s in the US, and the corporate red tape in trying to make that happen has been not only frustrating, but a bit entertaining. My office neighbour couldn’t believe I was laughing about it …

(269/366) How Was Your Day?

(269/366) How was your day?

September 25, 2012 – I bet it was better than his. Even our worst days are probably better than the average homeless person’s is.

I woke up at 2 am and was violently sick for the next 5 hours. Food poisoning I imagine, though Kirk wasn’t sick and we ate the same food. I was scheduled for a full day course and somehow I managed to go. I just wanted to curl up in bed and die, but I’d been trying to get into this class for a year and if I didn’t attend the payment would still be billed …

(268/366) Cardero’s

(268/366) Cardero's

September 24, 2012 – Today is Kirk’s Birthday, so it was a nice dinner, dockside at Cardero’s. And yes, we had more than bread and wine, although the location would have made that totally acceptable! And no, we weren’t looking at a boat, but only because we got a table before our reservation and before the boat broker called. So we turned down the boat viewing and opted for a nice dinner instead. There will be more boats, but Kirk only has one birthday per year, and that’s more important!

(267/366) Water Babies

Blue Moon

September 23, 2012 – We had a little bit of running around to do today, and we decided to combine it with stopping by two marinas to see a few boats. The first stop was down at Coal harbour where we took a quick look at a very pretty Beneteau Oceanis 40 with a centre cockpit.

Isn’t she pretty?

And she is pretty much exactly what we want, but our new slip-mate seems to be persnickity about anything bigger than a 12′ beam next to him. I am guessing that he is either totally lacking confidence in his own docking …

(266/366) Boat Show Silliness and Yacht Club Irritants

(266/366) Boat Show Silliness

September 22, 2012 – We were down moving our boat into its new “outside” slip today, and after making the move we wandered over to the Mosquito Creek Boat Show to see what was on display. Besides a lot of very nice boats, there was a fund raiser that was entertaining.

Duck Golf. (Take a close look, that’s NOT a golf ball he’s hitting!)

The name of the game was to hit the duck into the dinghy tied below and win half the pot. This guy came sooooo close to winning $370!!!

So that’s the silliness, what’s the irritant?

So …
