Day 142 – Back When…

142/365 (May 22, 2011) – It was another rainy day today, but warmer than yesterday, so I took to the garden again.

Day 120 – Any Leprechauns Lurking?

120/365 (April 30, 2011) – Anyone remember the McDonalds Shamrock Shakes? I don’t eat McDonald’s, but I remember loving St Patrick’s Day for those things. I mean, how often do you get to drink green stuff? My mom used to have a planted shamrock as an indoor houseplant, not sure if she still has it or not. I have the…

Day 17 – If Mother Nature won’t give me snow….

17/365 (January 17, 2011) – ……well then I can at least be thankful that there are some small signs of the Spring that is apparently just around the corner.

Day 217 – Floating Forest

217/365 (August 5, 2010) – A stark contrast to the forests of British Columbia right now. I rode my bike out to Horseshoe Bay this morning and took my camera thinking I could get a nice shot up howe Sound. Hardly, when I arrived the Sound was so hazy I couldn’t see much past a mile. But it’s not smog,…

Day 204 – Summer Pleasures

204/365 (July 23, 2010) – Hands down my favourite herb, the peppery flavour of basil just pairs so damned well with fresh tomatoes and bocconcini. Pure heaven on a plate. I could forgo the meat and any veg on a plate if you passed me a bowl of tomatoes with basil and bocconcini. Which makes me realize, I haven’t bought…

185/365 (July 4, 2010) – The weather can’t make up its mind. It was cloudy here all day, but sunny elsewhere. According to the newspaper, gardens all over BC are suffering (Worst Year Ever For Plant Diseases). Mine is no exception. My Hellebore is covered in aphids and scaly bugs, and the aphids are starting to migrate to my newly…

Day 173 – Well, the Ferns are Doing Well Anyway…

173/365 (June 22, 2010) – Supposedly it’s summer, I’m still waiting though. The sun did poke it’s head out today, but the forecast, which was for more sun, has changed again. What the paper says and what Environment Canada say are two entirely different things, not that this should surprise me living on the coast. Weather reports are somewhat vague…

Day 158 – Drought Tolerant

158/365 (June 7, 2010) – Sedums are great. When you have a hot location that you just can’t ever seem to keep anything alive in, Sedums often do the trick. We’ll see how these do. They are pretty drought tolerant, so they should do well. The Yucca that grew like crazy did well here…too well in fact, it had to…

Day 77 – Water Hawthorne

77/365 (March 18, 2010) – One of the harbingers of Spring, the water hawthorne starts blooming as early as January some years, if it’s been particularly warm, and continues flowering until long after the crocuses and daffodils are gone. Only when the temperatures rise and the pond water warms up does it retreat to the mud and lie in wait…
